Undercover Architecture transformed this Building of Townscape Merit within a Conservation Area into a contemporary yet characterful family home.
The project extends the house to create a light-filled open-plan living space connecting to the garden, supported by a bespoke cruciform stainless-steel column developed with Baker Chatterton Structural Design to preserve openness without a downstand beam. Traditional brick detailing and self-supporting arch lintels ensure the new extension sits harmoniously with the original architecture.
Inside, a grand double-height entrance hall features a sweeping bespoke staircase, while the upper floors are reconfigured with a new mansard roof and dormer additions to enhance space and light. Throughout, the design reinstates period detailing and integrates refined modern finishes, including a Bulthaup kitchen, Patagonia Quartzite stonework, and considered lighting, to create a home that balances heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary living.
